"You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield."

Thanks for praying with us.

Here are just a few of our speculative insights into this week's Psalm. We wondered whether it was a Psalm for after a military victory, since it's concerned with the dead and with foreign worship, and it implies that Israel is in a place to receive glory (that they are then handing over to God).

We wondered whether it was originally designed for multiple voices, especially at the end, where the last four stanzas seem like a call and response. It's beautiful to imagine a clear voice offering admonition to Israel, with the chorus of Israel praising the Lord, then a clear voice offering blessing to Israel, with the chorus of Israel promising to continue their praise forever.

How marvelous it is that "all that [God] pleases," includes being our "help" and our "shield"!

Here are this week's requests and praises:

Student Retreat - This week, Wheatstone runs a four-day event for a Partner School! Just like our summer camp, it's focused on Esther, and it's called "Here, in the City of Man." Pray for Eric, who's speaking; Peter, Veronica, Barak, and Connor, who are mentoring; and Lisa, who's managing. Pray for the students and teachers who attend: that God would bind them together into a community of growth and joy.

First Alumni Event - Pray for great turnout and a joyful time at our first alumni event this Saturday from 1-5pm.

Academy Families - Continue to pray for Veronica as she prepares to announce our new offerings for alumni parents!

Continued ministry - Continue to pray for the students and leaders who attended this year's Summer camp.

School starting - Many, many of our alumni are starting the new school year right now. Pray that God would bless their year of study.

Monthly Givers Rally - September is our annual push for new Monthly Givers. It's been a pretty rough year, financially, so we're setting a pretty ambitious goal, and praying that God uses smaller, recurring gifts to get us back on track. Please pray for favor with the community, and ample provision for our needs through monthly giving.

Benefactors - We'd like to secure two more donations of $10,000 or more this month. Pray for God's blessing and favor with big givers!

Peter's Computer - The saga continues! The hard drive onto which we successfully moved the data from Peter's ruined laptop decided to break too. Now it's at a data extraction place, and we're back to square one. Please pray that, in particular, Peter's writing for his book and his work on From Duty to Discipleship would be recovered.

This week's Psalm

    Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory,
        for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!

    Why should the nations say,
        “Where is their God?”
    Our God is in the heavens;
        he does all that he pleases.

    Their idols are silver and gold,
        the work of human hands.
    They have mouths, but do not speak;
        eyes, but do not see.
    They have ears, but do not hear;
        noses, but do not smell.
    They have hands, but do not feel;
        feet, but do not walk;
        and they do not make a sound in their throat.
    Those who make them become like them;
        so do all who trust in them.

    O Israel, trust in the LORD!
        He is their help and their shield.
    O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD!
        He is their help and their shield.
    You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD!
        He is their help and their shield.

    The LORD has remembered us; he will bless us;
        he will bless the house of Israel;
        he will bless the house of Aaron;
    he will bless those who fear the LORD,
        both the small and the great.

    May the LORD give you increase,
        you and your children!
    May you be blessed by the LORD,
        who made heaven and earth!

    The heavens are the LORD's heavens,
        but the earth he has given to the children of man.
    The dead do not praise the LORD,
        nor do any who go down into silence.
    But we will bless the LORD
        from this time forth and forevermore.
    Praise the LORD!
