"'Because the poor are plundered, because the needy groan, I will now arise,' says the Lord; 'I will place him in the safety for which he longs.'"

PSALM 12:5

Today, we arrived at Psalm 12. It continues a series that started with Psalm 9, in which the psalmists confront the injustices of human society and ask God to "arise" and act. Now, in Psalm 12, God himself speaks for the first time, and this is what he says:

"'Because the poor are plundered, because the needy groan, I will now arise,' says the Lord; 'I will place him in the safety for which he longs.'"

After so much time lamenting the hot injustices of human society, this verse is like cool water. Though God still places safety in the future tense, his voice and action refresh us and give us a taste of the complete security that's coming someday soon. As the psalmist turns away from this refreshing voice, he continues to see the world as it is. The last verse is, "On every side the wicked prowl, as vileness is exalted among the children of man." He isn't an unrealistic positive thinker; he still sees what's broken. But when we remember the action of God, and his love for the poor and oppressed, our response to injustice can change. Like him, we can be patient, prayerful, and hopeful.

Questions:

- Do you believe in the present action, abiding concern, and future deliverance of the just God?
- How does remembering God's present action change how you relate to present injustice?

This Week's Psalm

PSALM 12

Save, O Lord, for the godly one is gone;
    for the faithful have vanished from among the children of man.
Everyone utters lies to his neighbor;
    with flattering lips and a double heart they speak.

May the Lord cut off all flattering lips,
    the tongue that makes great boasts,
those who say, “With our tongue we will prevail,
    our lips are with us; who is master over us?”

“Because the poor are plundered, because the needy groan,
    I will now arise,” says the Lord;
    “I will place him in the safety for which he longs.”
The words of the Lord are pure words,
    like silver refined in a furnace on the ground,
    purified seven times.

You, O Lord, will keep them;
    you will guard us from this generation forever.
On every side the wicked prowl,
    as vileness is exalted among the children of man.
