"...his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night."
Thanks for praying with us.
We've jumped through a lot of Psalms since the Prayer Team started a year ago. Today, we start a more systematic approach: we discussed Psalm 1, and we'll move forward from here in order: Psalm 2 next week, etc.
Today we were struck by the word "meditate" in verse 3 of Psalm 1. "Meditate" has primarily quiet, receptive, individual connotations in English, but when you open a Hebrew lexicon for the word, you find a poetic term that can mean things like "soliloquize," "muse," "speak," "moan," and even "growl." That surprised us. It made the word much more creative, active, and public than we expected. At the very least, it inspired us to think of "meditating" on the law of God (the activity of delighting in the law) as creative: the sort of thing that would lead to writing Psalms.
Maybe, in the first psalm, the psalmist is describing psalm-composing as the activity of a "blessed" person. That's pretty cool. It made us want to go write some psalms.
How will you "meditate" on the teachings of God this week?
Here are Wheatstone's requests and praises today:
Financial burdens - We have less coming in through donations than we need right now, and it's causing significant strains. Pray for Peter and Lisa as they make decisions in response to the financial facts, and pray that - however he wants - God would bring new financial provision in quickly.
Operations intern - We're seeking an intern for this semester. Please pray that God brings us the right candidates!
Advancement Intern - We're seeking an intern for this semester. Please pray that God brings us the right candidates!
Grant Writing - The husband of an alumna is donating some grantwriting time and expertise. Pray that God would give us favor with the foundations we approach.
Monthly Givers - Pray that God would increase monthly giving to cover all Wheatstone's recurring expenses by the end of 2016.
Public Discussion for Transformation - This Saturday is our biannual public DfT training! Pray that God would bring the right participants and use the training to make many communities more effective at inviting their youth into Christian adulthood.
Torrey Academy Parents Night - On Saturday, Peter led a few Torrey Academy Parents in an intimate, interactive seminar on discussion. Praise God that it went really well, with one parent saying it was "just what he needed."
Public Teach Them to Pray - We have fewer people signed up than we want for this Saturday's event. Pray that God would bring the right people to this important training.
This week's Psalm
Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
for the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.
